The KISS (Keep It Simple and Smart) planter is a mechanised tree-planting attachment developed for use with forestry base machines — typically excavators or purpose-built forestry tractors — to automate or semi-automate the process of seedling establishment following clearfall harvesting. Designed to address the labour intensity and high cost of manual planting, the KISS planter operates by using a soil-penetrating dibble or coulter mechanism to open a planting slot or pit in prepared ground, into which a seedling is deposited from an onboard magazine or cassette system before the soil is firmed around the root plug.
