Vision grading is an automated timber and log assessment technology that uses machine vision — typically high-resolution cameras combined with structured light, laser profiling, or X-ray imaging — to evaluate the quality, dimensions, and defect profile of wood products as they move along a processing line. Unlike traditional manual grading, which relies on trained assessors making subjective visual judgements, vision grading systems capture thousands of data points per second and apply algorithms trained on large datasets of graded specimens to classify each piece consistently and objectively. At sawmills, vision grading cameras scan boards for surface defects such as knots, checks, wane, blue stain, and splits; the system then assigns a grade and can direct an automated diverter to sort boards into the appropriate product stream in real time. Log scanning systems, meanwhile, estimate optimal bucking patterns to maximise value recovery before the log ever enters the breakdown saw.
