A tree seeding robot is a ground-based autonomous machine engineered to direct-sow tree seeds into prepared or unprepared soil, offering a lower-cost alternative to seedling transplantation by eliminating the nursery-propagation stage. Unlike planting robots that handle pre-grown seedlings, seeding robots work with raw or pre-treated seeds — often coated with protective polymers, fungicides, or nutrient primers — and are tasked with placing individual seeds or seed clusters at precise depths, spacings, and orientations to maximise germination and early establishment rates. The mechanical systems involved typically include a terrain-following chassis, a seeding coulter or drill unit that opens a narrow furrow, a metering mechanism to singulate and drop seeds, and a closing wheel or presser to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. Navigation draws on GNSS-guided waypoint following and real-time terrain sensing, with some systems using machine-vision to identify microsites — small areas of exposed mineral soil, suitable moisture, and low competing vegetation — that offer the highest probability of seedling establishment. In forestry applications, direct seeding by robot is most appropriate for species with large seeds that tolerate mechanical handling, such as eucalypts, acacias, and conifers, and for environments where seedling transport logistics are prohibitive. Australia's vast semi-arid and arid pastoral zones — subject to revegetation requirements under carbon farming initiatives and land-restoration obligations — present a strong use-case, as ground-access robotic seeding can cover large areas at lower cost than helicopter broadcast seeding while achieving more precise seed placement. Research groups at universities in Queensland and Western Australia have explored robotic direct seeding of native species for Landcare restoration programs. Key challenges include seed predation after sowing, soil moisture unpredictability, and the need for post-sowing monitoring to assess germination success.
