SwePlant is a mechanised tree-planting machine developed in Sweden, designed to automate the labour-intensive process of seedling planting in harvested forest areas, particularly following clear-felling operations in boreal and temperate plantation forests. The machine is typically mounted as an attachment on a conventional forest base machine (excavator or purpose-built carrier) and combines site preparation and planting functions in a single pass: a mounding or patch scarification head first breaks up the humus layer and creates a mineral soil mound, and then a planting mechanism inserts a containerised seedling into the prepared microsites at a controlled depth with appropriate soil contact. This integration of scarification and planting into one continuous operation significantly reduces the number of machine passes required compared to traditional sequential methods, lowering soil disturbance and cost per planted seedling. SwePlant-type systems have demonstrated planting rates of 1,000–2,000 seedlings per machine-hour under favourable terrain conditions, a substantial improvement over manual planting productivity. The technology addresses a persistent labour availability challenge in Nordic forestry, where seasonal peaks in replanting demand coincide with short weather windows and a declining rural labour pool. While SwePlant was developed primarily for Scandinavian spruce and pine regeneration contexts, the underlying machine concept has attracted interest in other plantation forestry regions facing similar labour constraints. In Australia, mechanised planting research and commercial trials have been conducted for eucalyptus and pine plantations, particularly in South Australia and Victoria, where large-scale estate replanting programs must be completed within narrow seasonal windows after harvesting. Australian terrain — often rockier, steeper, and with heavier residues than Nordic sites — presents engineering challenges for direct technology transfer, but adapted machine designs drawing on the SwePlant concept are being evaluated as the plantation sector seeks to reduce its dependence on manual planting gangs.
