Air-based seed separation
A custom seed sorter is a specialised piece of machinery or integrated processing system designed to separate, grade, and classify tree seeds by size, weight, density, viability, or other physical or optical properties, enabling nurseries and seed orchards to produce planting lots of consistent quality and high germination potential. Seed sorting is a critical step in forest nursery operations because raw seed lots — particularly those collected from native tree species or open-pollinated seed orchards — contain highly variable proportions of filled (viable) versus empty, underdeveloped, or damaged seeds, and sowing unsorted lots wastes nursery resources through low germination rates and uneven seedling emergence. Custom seed sorters are tailored to the specific morphological characteristics of the target species, since seed size, shape, and surface texture vary enormously across forest tree genera: the small, winged seeds of eucalypts and acacias require very different handling machinery than the larger, cone-extracted seeds of radiata pine or Douglas-fir. Common sorting technologies include air-blast separators (which exploit density differences), oscillating sieves and screens (which sort by size and shape), and optical sorters equipped with near-infrared (NIR) or X-ray sensors that can distinguish filled from empty seeds based on internal density or moisture content, achieving separation accuracy that is impossible with mechanical methods alone. In Australian tree nurseries — particularly those operated by state forestry agencies and large plantation companies in Western Australia, Victoria, and Queensland — custom seed sorters play an important role in maximising the productivity of elite genetic material from seed orchards, where seed is costly to produce and limited in volume. Automation of seed sorting, including integration with seed lot tracking systems and automated packaging, is advancing the efficiency and traceability of the seed-to-seedling supply chain that underpins large-scale reforestation and plantation establishment programs.
