Description: AVATAR is a research‑developed digital training, coaching, and simulation framework led by Skogforsk, the Forestry Research Institute of Sweden, and funded under the EU Horizon 2020 and ForestValue programmes. Its core aim is to accelerate skill acquisition, improve operational consistency, and reduce mental workload for operators of harvesters and forwarders in fully mechanised forestry systems.
Unlike simple machine simulators, AVATAR combines high‑fidelity simulation, real‑machine data capture, and a “digital coach” concept. Using CAN‑bus data, lidar‑based environmental sensing, and motion analysis, the system identifies work phases, evaluates operator behaviour against best‑practice patterns, and provides structured feedback through simulators and in‑cab interfaces. This allows both novice and experienced operators to train against measurable performance and quality indicators, rather than relying solely on subjective instruction.
AVATAR is assessed at TRL 6–7. Core algorithms, simulators, and feedback concepts have been validated through multi‑year field trials on production harvesters and forwarders in Sweden, Germany, and Norway, and demonstrated in professional training environments. However, AVATAR remains primarily a research‑to‑applied‑training platform, not a fully commercial, off‑the‑shelf product.
Cost data is not published as a single commercial price. Based on comparable forestry simulators and the AVATAR project structure, deployment would typically involve capital costs in the low‑ to mid‑six‑figure cost range for simulator hardware, software integration, and course development at a training‑centre level, with lower per‑operator marginal costs once established. Ongoing costs relate to curriculum updates, instructor capacity, and data management rather than per‑machine licensing.
For Australian forestry, AVATAR is best suited to plantation and mechanised native forest systems where harvesters and forwarders dominate operations and where workforce shortages make accelerated training valuable.
